I just noticed yesterday that I didn’t write a post on the Best War Movies I’ve seen in 2012 and thought I’d remedy that immediately. Obviously the list consists of the movies I’ve watched this year and not the movies which came out this year. And it also consists only of the movies which I have seen for the first time that’s why you will neither find Platoon nor Tigerland on the list.
And here goes:

I’ve seen 6 of these so that’s not bad. battle of Algiers is superb, but the Duellists is a fav too.
They are all good in their own right and very different from each other.
I couldn’t say which is my favourite.

I watched The Dacians this week-end (Domitian’s conquests from the point of view of the ‘Barbarians’) and found it quite good, so I’m in the mood for more togas and gladii…

Of course it was the story as such, which I wasn’t familiar with which I liked a lot. They did however take some liberties…
I haven’t seen The Dacians but I like the period.
The Dacians was carefully designed according to the bas-relief on Trajan’s column in Rome. It has some flaws, but it makes a very good job at getting out of the usual ‘civilized vs barbarians’ point of view. And the battle scenes are filmed soviet-style, meaning they focus more on group momentum than on individual duels, something I often find more accurate… Guest review if you wish!
Yes, that would be good but not just now. I’m still flooded with e-mails from people who want to write guest posts. It needs to calm down a bit. Some are downright aggressive when I turn them down.
